Kick the Sugar

By: Cynthia Sass, MPH, MA, RD, CSSD

Americans are swimming in sugar. On average we consume 17 teaspoons of added sugar each day, according to the CDC - the equivalent of about 80 small jelly beans!

Excess sugar consumption is tied to an increased risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women. A surplus of added sugar has also been linked to type 2 diabetes and cancer risk, and may negatively affect psychological health.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that women limit added sugar consumption to a maximum of six teaspoons worth per day, and men no more than nine teaspoons worth per day. Every four grams of added sugar on a Nutrition Facts label equals one teaspoon. That translates to an advised daily cap of 24 grams of added sugar daily for women and 36 grams for men.
